Administrative brief: Durga visarjan 2026, Bhopal ghats
Short brief for forwarding. All figures are historical (2023–2025), computed by the backend from the supplied data; no 2026 measurements.
1. Scope
MPPCB Ganesh and Durga visarjan reports 2023–2025, 7 Bhopal ghats, readings before, during and one week after immersion. Compared with CPCB Class B (outdoor bathing): DO 5 mg/l or more, BOD 3 mg/l or less, pH 6.5–8.5. Total coliform is not in the data.
2. Historical findings
- Dissolved oxygen below 5 mg/l (Class B): 42 of 116 (numeric DO readings, all 7 ghats)
- Dissolved oxygen below 4 mg/l (Class D line): 17 of 116 (numeric DO readings)
- Dissolved oxygen read 0 mg/l: 4 (readings, all at Bairagarh (Sant Hirdaram) kund)
- BOD above 3 mg/l (Class B): 100 of 112 (numeric BOD readings, all 7 ghats)
- pH outside 6.5–8.5 (Class B): 6 of 115 (numeric pH readings)
- Durga readings only: DO below 5 / BOD above 3: 25 of 57 (DO readings below 5; BOD was above 3 in 50 of 53 Durga readings)
- Ghats flagged high risk: 5 of 7 (high risk = any DO below 4, or DO below 5 in more than half of readings)
- BOD already above 3 before immersion: 32 of 37 (pre-immersion readings. BOD was already above the limit in most readings taken before immersion, so these readings cannot show what immersion itself changed.)
3. Priority ghats
| # | Ghat | Tier | Main concern (from readings) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bairagarh (Sant Hirdaram) kund | Tier 1High risk | Dissolved oxygen fell below 4 mg/l in 6 of 13 readings (lowest 0 mg/l). |
| 2 | Malikhedi kund | Tier 1High risk | Dissolved oxygen fell below 4 mg/l in 3 of 13 readings (lowest 0.6 mg/l). |
| 3 | Khatlapura ghat | Tier 2 | Dissolved oxygen was below 5 mg/l in 8 of 18 readings. |
| 4 | Rani Kamlapati ghat / Kamla Park kund | Tier 2High risk | Dissolved oxygen fell below 4 mg/l in 4 of 18 readings (lowest 2.4 mg/l). |
| 5 | Shahpura lake ghat | Tier 2High risk | Dissolved oxygen fell below 4 mg/l in 3 of 18 readings (lowest 2.5 mg/l). |
| 6 | Prempura ghat | Tier 2High risk | Dissolved oxygen fell below 4 mg/l in 1 of 18 readings (lowest 3.9 mg/l). |
| 7 | Hathaikheda dam / kund | Tier 3 | BOD was above 3 mg/l in 16 of 18 readings. |
4. Proposed actions before and after 20 Oct
Recommendations for verification, by task group. Each ghat's list is on its work order.
- 11–15 Oct · Site identity check: Field visit to confirm which physical location the report's site name refers to.Rani Kamlapati ghat / Kamla Park kund (Recommendation — verify with MPPCB / CPCB guidelines.)
- 13–18 Oct · Water sampling: Priority pre-immersion sampling before 20 Oct: DO, BOD, pH and total coliform (past readings are missing).Bairagarh (Sant Hirdaram) kund, Malikhedi kund, Khatlapura ghat, Prempura ghat (Recommendation — verify with MPPCB / CPCB guidelines.)
- 15–20 Oct · Barricading & nets: Contain floating material with barricades, nets or booms; consider a liner or temporary pond where applicable. All ghats (Recommendation — verify with MPPCB / CPCB guidelines.)
- 15–20 Oct · Water sampling: Test pH before immersion and report the reading to the relevant MPPCB laboratory.Khatlapura ghat, Prempura ghat, Hathaikheda dam / kund (Recommendation — verify with MPPCB / CPCB guidelines.)
- 17–27 Oct · Aeration: Start aerators at the immersion zone before immersion and check dissolved oxygen (DO) daily with a portable meter. If DO stays below 4 mg/l before 20 Oct, refer to the officer to review an alternative immersion kund.Bairagarh (Sant Hirdaram) kund, Malikhedi kund, Rani Kamlapati ghat / Kamla Park kund, Shahpura lake ghat, Prempura ghat (Recommendation — verify with MPPCB / CPCB guidelines.)
- 18–22 Oct · Cleaning & debris: Collect flowers and organic offerings separately before immersion; remove idol remnants and debris after immersion; inspect for drains entering the water body. All ghats (Recommendation — verify with MPPCB / CPCB guidelines.)
- 20–27 Oct · Aeration: Keep aeration running during and after immersion (DO was often below the bathing standard). Check DO 1, 3 and 7 days after immersion.Bairagarh (Sant Hirdaram) kund, Malikhedi kund (Recommendation — verify with MPPCB / CPCB guidelines.)
- 27 Oct · Water sampling: Collect DO, BOD, pH and total coliform samples one week after immersion. All ghats (Recommendation — verify with MPPCB / CPCB guidelines.)
5. Target for the 27 Oct sample
- ☐ Dissolved oxygen: 5 mg/l or more
- ☐ BOD: 3 mg/l or less
- ☐ pH: 6.5 to 8.5
- ☐ Total coliform: 500 MPN/100 ml or less (Not in current data; needs a new test)
BOD was already above 3 mg/l in 32 of 37 pre-immersion readings (2023–2025), so full Class B by 27 Oct is unlikely at most ghats. The interim target does not replace Class B.
6. Resources
Not estimated: no sourced rates are available.
7. Data gaps and limitations
- 114 expected cells have no table in the reports: no Durga 2025 table for Bairagarh (Sant Hirdaram) kund; no Durga 2025 table for Malikhedi kund; no suspended solids rows in Durga 2023 (7 ghats); no suspended solids rows in Durga 2025 (5 ghats). These cells are missing, not passing.
- No total coliform data, so no ghat can be shown as meeting Class B in full.
- No 2026 readings: everything is historical (2023–2025).
- Readings show levels, not causes. Pre-immersion BOD was already above 3 in 32 of 37 readings, so the data cannot show what immersion itself changed.
- No health effects are claimed. Readings are reported against CPCB limits only.
- Units are assumed; the reports print none.
- Exact sampling dates are not in the dataset; only year, festival and phase.
- Report page references come from the CSV. Only a partial manual spot check against the PDFs has been done; other page references are not yet checked.
- Only 4 metals were tested (chromium, lead, zinc, copper); they have no Class B limit and are reported, not judged.
- Recommended actions are unverified against CPCB idol-immersion guidelines. Hindi text is a provisional translation.
